This article is over 5 years old A digger claws away at the sloping sides of the Mayan pyramid in Belize. The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology , Jaime Awe, said on Tuesday that the destruction at the Nohmul complex in northern Belize was detected late last week. The ceremonial centre dates back at least 2, years and is the most important site in northern Belize, near the border with Mexico.
But Awe said the builders could not possibly have mistaken the pyramid mound, which is about 30 metres ft tall, for a natural hill because the ruins were well known and the landscape there was naturally flat. It’s just bloody laziness,” Awe said. Photos from the scene showed diggers clawing away at the pyramid’s sloping sides, leaving an isolated core of limestone cobbles at the centre, with what appears to be a narrow Mayan chamber dangling above one clawed-out section.
Why can’t these people just go and quarry somewhere that has no cultural significance? The Nohmul complex sits on private land, but Belizean law says that any pre-Hispanic ruins are under government protection. The Belize community action group Citizens Organised for Liberty Through Action called the destruction of the archaeological site “an obscene example of disrespect for the environment and history”. It is not the first time this has happened in Belize, a country dotted with hundreds of Mayan ruins, though few as large as Nohmul.
Norman Hammond, an emeritus professor of archaeology at Boston University who worked on Belizean research projects in the s, wrote in an email that “bulldozing Maya mounds for road fill is an endemic problem in Belize the whole of the San Estevan centre has gone, both of the major pyramids at Louisville, other structures at Nohmul, many smaller sites , but this sounds like the biggest yet”. Arlen Chase, chairman of the department of anthropology at the University of Central Florida, said:

To save its position as the richest nation?
Excuse me, but even that is slipping rapidly.
The island served as an Arab port before Vasco da Gama visited in and finally the Portuguese established a port and naval base here. The chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte built in is considered to be the oldest non-indigenous building in the southern hemisphere. The island was Mozambique’s first capital.
The fascinating mix of African, Arab and European culture and history is displayed in the churches and mosques, beautiful colonial buildings with thick walls and small traditional houses, the imposing fort, the old Portuguese houses some dating back to the sixteenth century , the well-maintained, interesting museums and above all in the local population, their culture and their incredibly varied faces. There is a colourful and vibrant feel to the island with all the hustle and bustle; yet you can still feel the charm, sophistication and culture.
More and more guest houses and small boutique hotels are being opened in restored buildings, offering comfortable and charming accommodation at varied but not expensive prices. These rehabilitation activities are contributing to the gradual restoration of the island’s former splendours. Pemba to Ilha is km and takes almost 6 hours by road. To put it fairly crudely, you could say that Belize is indigenously Maya, ethnically Mestizo, and politically Creole. Like the Amish, the Mennonites are a Christian group dating back to 16th-century Holland. They left Holland for Russia in the late 17th century, after religious persecution at home; then it was on to Canada in the late 19th century, after Russia tried to conscript them into the military.
Most Belizean Mennonites migrated from Canada to Mexico in the early 20th century after Canada tried to include them in the national school system , and then from Mexico to Belize in the s, when Mexico wanted them to join its social security programme.

For singles traveling here or even those in a relationship but looking, Belize offers the chance of truly exotic adventure and variety. The country has a small population and you might have to look a little bit harder for a date and romance to suit your likes, compared to say neighboring Honduras or Guatemala. I will be bold and condemned for it, but your mileage may be off the Richter scale in Belize. Experienced travelers tend to follow the advice of locals and head off to the sports bars that spring up and dot most any population center in Belize.
Shut down by U. Today it is mostly village or underground. The general rule as in any other country is to first consult the concierge. If this is below your room rate, next down would be the bellhop. If you have no bellhop, consult the bartender. Beyond that is the wildcard of the taxi driver or your tour guide. Dating is easier in the high volume tourism spots such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia and increasingly in southern Belize. If the tourist is a person of means, often he or she can fly off with a new partner from Belize in no short order.

Probably at least four hundred thousand people lived in the Belize area around AD —twice as many as today. Mayan civilization had collapsed by the sixteenth century, when Spanish expeditions reached the area. Diseases like smallpox and yellow fever killed many. The Spanish controlled the western part of present-day Belize. But English pirates used the eastern side, on the Caribbean Sea, as a base for their raids on ships. On land, they plundered logwood, a tree used to produce a dye used in the woolen industry.
Mahogany later became the major export.

Goldberg The geoarchaeology of hominin dispersals to and from tropical Southeast Asia: Abstract Tropical Southeast Asia is a critically important region for addressing the major questions and grand challenges that concern us today regarding Late Pleistocene hominin dispersals across the Old World. Geoarchaeological science is widely employed in many regions of the world to contextualise archaeological material and provide an environmental backdrop against which to explore archaeological narratives.
However, in Southeast Asia there is an apparent lag in the routine use of this Earth-Science approach despite the abundance of archaeological sites important in explicating past hominin dispersals to and from the region. In this review of the state-of-the-art of geoarchaeological research in Southeast Asia, I examine the role of the discipline in addressing the important issues in archaeology today.
I identify where geoarchaeology is being used and to what effect, highlighting gaps in the geoarchaeological dataset. From a methodological point of view it is imperative that archaeologists and geoarchaeologists working in Southeast Asia and other humid tropical regions of the world fully appreciate how to interpret the geoarchaeological signatures associated with this climate regime so that methods and practice can be refined.
A series of steps that will serve to drive forward geoarchaeological research in the region are also proposed.
